Pastures are our greatest asset on a farm. We are not just growing grass, we are growing good bacteria, fungi, microorganisms, insects, roots, organic matter, oxygen, nutrition, and a flourishing ecosystem. If we approach pastures as a waste dumping ground to use, abuse, and ignore then we will have very short term use and cascading, compounding, negative effects year after year. This looks like erosion, pest insects, weeds, bare soil, lessening organic matter, no water retention and extreme compaction.
However, if we approach pastures as our greatest asset and invest our time, energy, input, money, and management we will receive compounding, cascading positive effects year after year. This looks like covered soil, increasing organic matter, increased water retention, reduced compaction, nutrient increase, consistent regrowth cycles, stress resistant environment.
Sunshine & rain are free, and many times we pass on the opportunity to capture, utilize & benefit from its many gifts. Let’s look at our pastures as our greatest asset, our greatest tool to capture the priceless gifts from mother nature and have them benefit our animals and our environment.
